5 Super hacks to help clean your Carpet
Fixing a carpet requires a professional; maintaining one requires quick thinking. That’s right, carpet-cleaning hacks should be ticked off your to-do list the moment you finish reading this post. If you don’t know the hacks to on-the-spot carpet cleaning, you’ve got a problem. Different items can drop, spill, or splash on the carpet when least expected. The key is to be ready at all times and we’ve got the solutions for you.
How to clean a carpet?
There are two types of cleaning methods that you should adopt. The first one is the deep cleaning method where you use a steam cleaner every six months. It involves a cleaning solution applied to the carpet through the pressure applied by the cleaning appliance. So, under pressure, this cleaning solution is injected into the carpet through water-jet nozzles. The solution along with hot water and steam will penetrate right through the fibers until the backing layer at the base of the carpet. The hot steam loosens embedded soil, dust, debris, and stubborn dirt particles.
The next type of cleaning method includes a range of cleaning hacks which we will get into right now.
1. Blotting, not scrubbing
After a prominently dark-colored spill makes its way to your carpet, the trick is to blot out the stain. Scrubbing a stain causes it to further spread through the fiber threads. Gentle dabs can be done with a cleaning solution, a clean cloth, a sponge, or a paper towel to soak up the stain. Whatever you use, make sure to dab the affected area inward and not outward. This will help prevent the spreading of the stain.
2. Club soda or white vinegar with water
Anyone can get a little tipsy and spill their drink at a party. Your carpet takes the hit for it! So, club soda can be used to remove stains caused by beer or wine. All you have to do is pour the club soda onto a clean cloth. Then use that cloth to blot out the stain. You’ll know this works if the stain gets light. Repeat this step until the stain has vanished.
Sometimes, club soda may not work. You can alternatively, try white vinegar with water. Add white vinegar and water in a spray bottle in the ratio of 1:1. Spray this solution on the stained area and wait for 10-15 minutes to let the solution soak in completely. Now, use a clean and dry sponge to press upon the stained area. This helps remove the solution and the stain. Repeat this procedure until the stain has completely vanished.
Your work is not done once the stain has left. You have to make the affected area on the carpet look like it never encountered a stain before. So, use warm water to rinse that spot, and brush the carpet strands with your hands in their natural direction. Place several white paper towels over the once affected area and rest a heavy item like a big book over the sheets. Any dampness that was left from the cleaning solution will be removed by the paper towels. This takes at least a day until the carpet is completely dry. It’s a slightly lengthy procedure but it’s a carpet cleaning hack that works.
3. Shaving Cream
This short but effective hack requires nothing but shaving cream. Well, you’ll still need 1:1 white vinegar and water. So, you have to apply the shaving cream directly to the stain and let it rest for half-hour. After 30 minutes have passed, blot out the cream with a dry cloth. In the end, spray the white vinegar and water solution to the area and wipe with a dry cloth.
4. Eco-88 or ZorbX
Do you have pets at home? They are prone to causing accidents on the carpet. Also, did you lately spill coffee or tea? Then stock up on some organic cleaners, namely Eco-88 or ZorbX for either pet accidents or caffeinated beverage spills. This time, blotting won’t help. Use a spray bottle to spray the cleaner onto the affected area of the pet’s accident. Scrub until the stain and odor are completely removed from the carpet. Once, the stain is removed, use a clean white cloth or paper towel to wipe away the cleaning solution.
5. Ice cubes
Who knew that ice cubes could come in handy for your carpet?! Ice cubes can be used to remove those stubborn and sticky chewing gums. Sometimes, our shoes can pick-up the worst kind of dirt from outside, into our house, and onto the carpet. It’s not easy to remove gum stuck to the carpet, so ice cubes play a major role here. With the help of ice cubes pressed against the gum for 30-45 seconds, you can freeze-dry the gum and turn it into a glob. Remove this gummy glob with a spoon. You can cut off the tips of the carpet strands that still have gum on them. It’s undetectable when you cut off just a short part of the strands.
We hope these five cleaning super hacks help maintain your carpet to look as good as new.
